CHENNAI: Construction of a four-lane flyover on Grand Northern Trunk (GNT) Road-Madhavaram High Road intersection in Moolakadai is likely to begin next week. The 600m long flyover will come up at a cost of Rs 33 crore along GNT Road (NH 5).
According to official sources, the highways department has issued work orders to city-based construction firm Consolidated Construction Consortium Limited, and the work is scheduled to be completed in 18 months from the date of commencement.
The project should have begun early this year but the department could not find a contractor to do the job and had to call for the tenders thrice.
The project gains significance as the GNT Road-Madhavaram High Road junction is one of the highly congested zones in north Chennai. Residents of places like Vyasarpadi, Madhavaram, Perambur, Kolathur and Red Hills regularly use these roads and the junction often witnesses traffic jams, even during non-peak hours.
Highways officials said traffic density on both Madhavaram High Road and GNT Road was on the rise, warranting a flyover there.
"The total cost of the project is Rs 50 crore, of which Rs 33 crore will be spent for construction. The remaining amount is the cost of land acquisition,'' said an official.
Many residents in the area said a flyover at GNT Road-Madhavaram High Road intersection was a long-pending demand and urged the authorities to ensure that the project was completed as per schedule.
"With the movement of all type of vehicles including lorries, trucks and buses and slow-moving vehicles, this intersection has become highly accident-prone these days. Roadside parking of vehicles and encroachments also cause hindrance to the traffic flow. It is very difficult for elderly people and children to cross the road here. The situation was worse during recent rains,'' said Vijayakumar, a resident of Madhavaram.
"The junction is not free even during night hours as movement of trucks towards Chennai Port is heavy on GNT Road. Once the flyover is constructed, heavy vehicles should not be allowed to take the road beneath it in the interest of smaller vehicles and pedestrians,'' said Thiyagarajan, a resident of north Chennai.
