The road traffic department of the Pune Municipal Corporation has invited tenders to reduce congestion on the Swargate-Hadapsar and Swargate-Katraj stretches.
The BRTS, which grew four years old earlier this month, has drawn criticism from citizens' groups and experts for lack of safety measures for pedestrians. Last week, chairman of the PMC standing committee Arvind Shinde, municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade, and PMC's additional city engineer and traffic planner Sriniwas Bonala had inspected the stretches and had resolved to implement measures to make them safer.
Prashant Inamdar of Pedestrians First, who has written to Zagade, said that the civic chief has failed to take any measures for the safety of pedestrians and bus commuters. Inamdar said that the zebra crossings are either faulty, completely missing or not clearly visible.
The letter pointed out that because of the lack of enforcement, buses and other vehicles halt on the zebra crossings and jump signals, while private vehicles enter the BRT lanes and footpaths or cycle tracks are used by two-wheelers which are already encroached upon.
He said that there are obstructions or unsafe conditions on the path that pedestrians use to cross the roads and that safe access to bus-stops is not available.
