PUNE: Stressing the importance of sustainable public transport for growing cities of the world, environmental scientist Peter Newman said on Tuesday that some of the major cities across the world had already started promoting mass public transport in a big way.
Speaking on "sustainable transport for resilient cities responding to climate change'' at the Symbiosis Vishwabhavan, Newman, professor of sustainability at the Curtin University, Australia, said that more investments needed in public transport in cities. "The era of cheap oil and free highways is over. Oil production is decreasing, and one has to focus on how the city's growth can be associated with less oil. Going by the current trend of oil use in India, it will become the third largest importer of oil by 2020,'' Newman said.
The focus, he said, should be on developing facilities for pedestrians and bicycle users. Cities have to concentrate on increased use of renewable energy, having sustainable transport and making it eco-efficient. Major cities in the world had been on a spree of building highways and flyovers. However, they have realised their mistakes and are now promoting public transport, he said.
The talk was organised jointly by the Australia-India Council, Centre for Environment Education, Parisar, FEED and MCCIA.
