CHENNAI: The Metro Rail Limited has awarded contracts for three different sections of underground works and tunnels near the proposed Meenambakkam metro rail station, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Friday, after inspecting the ongoing Metro works in the city.
The contract for design and construction of underground stations at Washermenpet, Mannadi, High Court, Central and Egmore, and associated tunnels at a cost of Rs 1,566.81 crore was given to Trans Tonnel StoryAf Conf JV. Another tender was for underground stations at Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar, Anna Nagar Tower and Thirumangalam, at a combined cost of Rs 1,030.99 crore, was also given to them. For underground stations at Nehru Park, Kilpauk Medical College and Pachiappa's college, the contract was bagged by Metro Tunneling Chennai L TSUCG JV for Rs 705.75 crore.
Stalin inspected works going on at the site of the proposed metro station near the Airport. He then visited the site near the military hospital in St Thomas Mount, SIDCO, JN Road in Vadapalani and then the metro depot that is coming up in Koyembedu. Giving details on the 45-km metro project being undertaken in Chennai, Stalin said that the project would help six lakh commuters on a daily basis.
A total stretch of 24-km will be underground while 21 km will be elevated. The portions of Corridor1 with a length of 14.3 km from Washermanpet to Saidapet, and Corridor2 with a length of 9.7 km. from Chennai Central to Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue will be underground and the remainder elevated.
"Metro will reduce 50 per cent of the travel time and benefit at least 45 per cent of the city's population that is currently dependent on public means of transport," Stalin added.
