The Killer stretch in Chennai

CHENNAI: Anna Salai, aka Mount Road, has topped the chart of the most bloodthirsty roads in the city. On the 16-km stretch between Island Grounds and Kathipara Junction in Guindy, 50 lives were lost and 248 persons were injured in 2010.

The second and third are not surprises though East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road. ECR (from Thiruvanmiyur signal to Muttukadu boat house - 17 km) stands a notch below Anna Salai with 46 deaths, and 150 persons were rushed to hospitals with injuries. OMR, from Madhya Kailash signal to Sholinganallur signal, saw 41 deaths and 188 in hospital beds with non-fatal injuries.

They were followed by Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (39 causalities and 276 non-fatal accidents), Periyar EVR High Road (32 causalities).

The fatal numbers on Anna Salai have accelerated despite a crop of preventive measures by the traffic police. Neither barricades put up on Anna Salai during witching hours nor keeping the signal lights at major junctions working post 11pm has really paid off. The number of accidents between 11 pm and 6 am on Anna Salai has only shot up compared to other arterial roads.

A senior traffic police officer said, "Earlier, the traffic signals on

Anna Salai was on only till 11 pm. To avoid road mishaps, a team of traffic enforcement officers was assigned to maintain surveillance at major signals on Anna Salai, and signals were kept working 24X7."

The city traffic police have in store more traffic awareness campaigns, including banners and hoardings. According to statistics for 2010, 142 youths aged between 18 and 34 were killed in accidents while driving a bike or riding pillion. Of the 621 killed, at least 185 men and 8 women were under the age bracket of 15 to 29.

According to statistics, one in every 5 persons killed in road accidents was a senior citizen and 25% of them were women. 80% of senior citizens killed on roads were pedestrians. And the maximum number of pedestrians were done in by two-wheelers.

The number of cases booked in 2010 has gone up by 10 % from 2009.
