AHMEDABAD: In the last four financial years, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) spent an estimated Rs 153 crore paying consultants for projects worth Rs 5,573 crore earmarked as capital expenditure in these years.
This amount is equivalent to the project cost of building an additional BRTS network covering 54 kilometres, estimates the finance department of the AMC. The civic body paid the amount to different consultants, including designing consultants and project management consultants, and even sought third party inspections for the projects. The opposition Congress plans to raise this issue in the coming general board meeting on the municipal budget discussions.
AMC finance department estimates that close to 27 per cent of the total budget of the AMC goes into just paying salaries to municipal employees. "With Rs 150 crore corpus one can set up an in-house consultation firm with a group of specialised engineers and officers as its members. This firm can earn revenue for the AMC by taking up consultation projects of private parties," said a senior member of the standing committee.
