PUNE: PMC standing committee passed work tenders of Rs 98 crore for 101-km BRTS road. Under criticism for delay in completing theBus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project on time, the Pune Municipal Corporation has decided to soon implement the BRTS on 27 more roads, including those proposed to be completed for Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008, despite the Shiv Sena-BJP registering protest.
The PMC standing committee on Tuesday passed work tenders of Rs 98 crore for 101-km BRTS road. The work includes putting up lane separators, 733 specially designed bus stops and signages along the BRTS lane.
“The civic administration plans to start BRTS on 27 more roads at the earliest. The tender of developing facilities was approved with majority vote. The Congress-NCP voted in favour of the proposal while Shiv Sena-BJP alliance opposed it and the MNS abstained from voting,” said Arvind Shinde, chairman of standing committee.
NCP leader Nilesh Nikam said the administration has been given suggestion to create a dedicated lane on roads that are more than 36m wide. Bit narrow roads will not have any dedicated lanes.
BJP leader Mukta Tilak said the PMC has failed to implement the BRTS on pilot route from Katraj to Hadapsar.
“The BJP opposes the implementation of BRTS on 27 more roads. The roads are congested and more traffic would only create chaos,” she said.
The Shiv Sena-BJP had protested after there were series of accidents reported on the pilot route after introduction of dedicated lanes for public transport buses. The PMC has already empowered the city police to penalise private vehicles entering BRTS lanes.
The list of 27 roads are Tilak Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, Paud Road, Nagar Road,Airport Road, Yerawada-Vishrantwadi Road, Mundhwa-Kharadi Road and Jangli Maharaj Road. Those on the list of proposed for the Commonwealth Games are Airport to Ramwadi octroi post, Sancheti Hospital to government poultry farm, Shivaji Road, Nehru Road, Fergusson College Road, Ganeshkhind Road, Baner Road-Green Park hotel to Westerly bypass, Balewadi gaothan to Westerly bypass, Bajirao Road, Balewadi gaothan to Baner gaothan, Airport Road to Deccan College, Kalyaninagar junction to Alandi Road and Airport junction to Vishranwadi junction.
