Cong, MJP protest civic tax hike in Surat


SURAT: The Congress and Mahagujrat Janta Party have taken on the ruling BJP over the hike in the user charges tax put forward in the upcoming Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) budget.


The police detained over 90 Congress leaders who were protesting outside the civic body office on Wednesday.

Earlier on Monday, the MJP had staged a dharna outside the main SMC office at Muglisara. They raised slogans against the civic body and the administrative officials as they were not allowed to set up tent outside the building.

Later, the Congress leaders under the leadership of Surat district Congress party chief Shambhu Prajapati staged a protest outside the SMC office, without police permission and were detained.

Opposition leader Babu Rayka of the Congress said after his release: “We had demanded permission from the police but it was rejected. We are fighting for the people of Surat and will continue our agitation in the coming days. If the police denies us permission, we will take our agitation to the streets. SMC has imposed a hike of Rs 100 crore in terms of taxes.”


Fakir Chaudhan of the MJP said, “We will continue our agitation against the ruling party in all the zone offices of corporation in the coming days.”
