CHENNAI: Dug up for new Metro Water pipelines and left without the project being completed, New Avadi Road is proving to be nightmare for residents and motorists. Residents along the road, a vital link connecting the western suburbs and Chennai, were happy when the pipeline work started but the inordinate delay has turned the anticipation into anger.
“The road has been congested as one side is blocked for infrastructure work and vehicles ply only on the other side, resulting in traffic jams during peak hours. This leads to frequent squabbles among motorists,” said civic activist K. Ramadoss of Ayanavaram.
Tea stall owner A. Rajendran said, “It would be nearly eight months since the work began. The women and relatives of patients who come from the government peripheral hospital on the other side to buy things, find it tough to cross the road.”
“It takes 15 minutes for pedestrians to cross the road during peak hours. A minimum of 10 motorists fall every day due to lack of road space while taking a turn towards Anna Nagar. During the monsoon, vehicle owners, two-wheeler riders in particular, suffered a lot,” he said.
R. Sanjai, who works in Anna Nagar, said the road has become heavily congested due to a portion of it being used for traffic both ways. “Motorists fear for their life at night because of careless drivers. Many accidents occur at the Anna Nagar 3rd Avenue-ICF Road junction,” he said. “The road is a vital link for motorists heading to Aminjikarai, Koyambedu and Vadapalani. It has become a nightmare to ride on the road after it shrunk to half its size.” When contacted, Metro Water officials refused comment.
