NEW DELHI :A pedestrian path in Lajpat Nagar II has been in a shabby state for the last six months. Angry residents now plan to repair the stretch on their own. The PWD had started beautification work in the area along with the pedestrian path but after three months work was stopped suddenly. And now the residents and commuters have no space to walk.
A resident of Lajpat Nagar II, Pranjal Sen said, "This pedestrian way is just next to the sub-way. It has broken completely. Hundreds of commuters use it daily. Earlier, PWD officers told us that they were beautifying the area but now they are doing nothing."
Before the CWG, PWD dug up the way and planted some saplings along the track. They decided to finish construction work before the Games. But till now, work is pending and nobody is taking it seriously.
RWA secretary J S Sehrawat said, "Work is over-delayed; the previous pedestrian way along with the sub-way was quite good. If PWD is not able to do the job they should let us know. Now we have decided that after a month, we shall collect funds door to door and will construct the pedestrian way on our own."
When PWD engineer Ajay Aggrawal was contacted, he said, "Due to lack of funds work could not be finished. Work will start in the next financial year."
Residents feel this is another excuse. Pranjal Sen said, "If they can't deliver the results on time, why they do give false promises?"
Most of the commuters from Defence Colony use this subway to go to Moolchand or adjoining areas. Due to the broken pavement, people generally prefer to use the road and put their lives at risk on this busy stretch. Authorities should take it seriously before any major mishap takes place.
Pranjal Sen said, "I had sent a written complaint to the PWD head office on November 24. But there is no response from their end. If they do not finish work, I plan to use RTI to know the reason behind the delay."
