AHMEDABAD: If not for the green idea, it is economics that have pushed the Amdavadi to ride the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). Soon after the Centre announced the fuel price hike, people riding the BRTS began climbing. The Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd (AJL) run mass transit system recorded a 12% jump in passengers in just 15 days.
And, it is no coincidence that this rise happened after January 16 — when petrol prices went up by Rs 2.54 per litre.
Officials at AJL say that after the fuel price hike, at least 1.13 lakh people travel by BRTS everyday; earlier the number averaged at around 1 lakh. Initially, the authorities thought it was because of the marriage season, but the numbers remained constant.
On January 23, which was a Sunday, there were over 1.15 lakh passengers which dropped to 1.01 lakh three days later on Republic Day, indicating how popular it was among working executives.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's commissioner IP Gautam says, "This rise was mainly because of the hike in fuel prices. We are expecting another increase of 25% in the passengers once the feeder buses are put on road. There has been a delay but we will be getting buses from Tata and Ashok Leyland by this month-end."
Right now, there is only one air-conditioned bus on the BRTS route, which AJL plans to hike by eight in the coming 10 days. Officials say, BRTS's daily income, which was around Rs 6 lakh before the fuel price hike has touched Rs 6.69 lakh now.
Vimal Patel, a resident of Maninagar and an executive in a multinational firm, says, "Earlier I used to take a car to my office near Shivranjani but after the fuel price hike, I have switched over to BRTS. I used to travel by this mode of transport once in a while earlier but now I have switched over completely."
Another MNC firm employee, Prakrut Oza, who too used to commute to his office on personal vehicle earlier, says, "I did not want to disturb my budget; so, I decided to switch over to BRTS after the fuel price hike,". "I try to make it on time for the AC bus," he says with a smile.
