It’s a profitable venture in other metros, but a loss-making proposition in Calcutta. A fleet of swank buses had promised to bring about a sea change in the way the city commutes — a welcome relief from the bone-rattling tin-and-wood monstrosities that have become part and parcel of Calcutta life.
Twenty months ago, 300 air-conditioned buses had hit the city roads under the JNNURM scheme, holding out hope of revolutionising transport in Calcutta by offering comfort and easy availability by tying up with Metro services and the airport. Not even two years later, the fleet has shrunk from 300 to 53. Of the 240 Tata buses, a mere 15 are in operation, while just 38 of the 60 Volvo buses are on the roads now.
