CHENNAI: The corporation's delay in executing traffic projects announced in the previous budgets came in for sharp criticism at an all-party meeting convened by mayor M Subramanian on Thursday. Party leaders demanded that the administration take up various traffic projects, including flyovers and foot over bridges immediately, to ease congestion. The orporation plans to table the budget for the next fiscal year on February 15.
PMK floor leader M Jayaraman came down heavily on the civic body for its failure to implement the subway-cum-flyover project at Dr Muthulakshmi Road (Lattice Bridge Road) in Tiruvanmiyur that was announced in the civic budget in 2008. "Due to the rise in the number of colonies off Rajiv Gandhi Salai and East Coast Road, thousands of motorists take this junction to move onto the city. The traffic scene here is chaotic all through the day but the civic body has not taken up the work seriously," he charged.
This was one among the several traffic projects conceived after the DMK-led council assumed charge in 2006. The corporation estimated that it would require Rs 123 crore for executing the project but a sum of Rs 93 crore, it was found, would be required just for acquiring 52 grounds of land. The plan was to have a 607-m flyover along West Avenue Road and Tiruvalluvar Salai and a 280-m subway on Dr Muthulakshmi Salai. The corporation is said to have developed reservations in taking up the project due to the escalation in land prices.
Jayaraman and the CPI's A Subramanian also spoke about the delay in taking up foot over bridges near Dr MGR Janaki Arts and Science College in Adyar and near the Chennai Beach Railway Station. "The corporation makes plenty of announcements but not many projects are realised. At least these projects, which would be of great help should be effectively implemented," said Subramanian. The CPM's Devi wondered about the fate of the stainless steel bus shelters about which the civic body had made "tall claims."
The elected representatives of Kodambakkam are not content with the North Usman Road-Mahalingapuram and South Usman Road-Doraiswamy Road flyovers. Zone chairman K Ezhumalai demanded two foot over bridges near T Nagar bus terminus connecting Burkit Road and Ranganathan Street. "Pedestrians are in a race with speedy vehicles. There is a need to end this menace," he said.
