CHENNAI: State finance minister K Anbazhagan will lay the foundation stone for construction of a much-awaited flyover on Grand Northern Trunk Road (NH 5) at Moolakadai junction on January 26.
The four-lane flyover, which is to be built at a cost of Rs 50 crore along GNT Road, is scheduled to be completed in 18 months.
The project, which was supposed to have began a year ago, could not take off since the highways department had to call for tenders thrice to get a contractor to do the work at the cost fixed by the authorities. The work order has now been issued to a city-based construction firm Consolidated Construction Consortium Limited.
"A flyover here has been a long-pending demand. During evening hours, it can take up to even half-an-hour to cross the junction. The new facility, once completed, will be a big relief for motorists and residents of north Chennai, mainly Madhavaram, Moolakadai, Perambur, Kolathur and Vyasarpadi,'' said K Sivaraman, a motorist living in Perambur.
"They made a stretch of Madhavaram-Redhills High Road near Moolakadai junction one way, but that hardly serves the purpose. As everyone is irritated due to the congestion, you can see a lot of quarrels between vehicle users,'' said V Mahalakshmi, a resident of Madhavaram.
Apart from reducing traffic congestion, the proposed flyover is also expected to speed up cargo movement to and from Chennai Port through GNT Road.
It was only last Wednesday that Union shipping minister GK Vasan inaugurated the Rs 267 crore Chennai Ennore port road connectivity' works to widen the Manali Oil Refinery Road, Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetti Road, Ennore Expressway and northern stretch of Inner Ring Road into four-lane roads, which had originally been planned eight years ago.
Traffic congestion in most parts of north Chennai went out of control last month when truckers staged a strike by parking their vehicles on roadsides, protesting against the poor road maintenance.
While the Chennai-Ennore road connectivity project is scheduled to be completed in two years, highways officials said they would ensure that GNT Road flyover was completed within one-and-a-half year, as scheduled.
"Of the total cost of Rs 50 crore, construction cost of the flyover would take Rs 33 crore and the remaining amount is to be spent on land acquisition and shifting of utilities,'' a senior highways official said.
